Lantern Parade in Busan

A month prior to Buddha’s Birthday, a congratulatory committee is formed to prepare for a celebratory event aimed at fostering unity among all temples and citizens of Busan. With the support of the Busan Buddhist Union, this event is designed to be participatory and inclusive, creating a communal space for everyone to come together.

About two weeks before the main event, Busan Station Plaza will be adorned with solemn decorations and multicolored lanterns, marking the solemnity with a ceremonial lighting of the “Congratulatory Symbolic Lantern.” Following this ceremony, the anticipation for the celebration intensifies. Over 1,700 temples, religious organizations, and Buddhist institutions in the Busan area will participate in various cultural events such as lantern crafting, traditional tea ceremonies, communal feasting, and diverse celebratory performances held throughout the city.

The highlight of the celebration is the “Congratulatory United Dharma Assembly” and the “Lantern Parade,” transcending sectarian boundaries to serve as a pure tribute to the Buddha’s presence on this land, symbolizing genuine jubilation and reverence.

Scheduled from late April to early May 2024, the celebration will take place at Song Sang-hyeon Square and Busan Citizens’ Park.
